Ikhil/Inuvik Gas Project

The Ikhil/Inuvik Gas Project is a wellhead to burner-tip operation created to supply Inuvik with natural gas from two wells at the Ikhil reservoir, located approximately 50 kilometres northwest of Inuvik on Inuvialuit lands. The project provides Inuvik residents and businesses with a secure supply of natural gas for electrical power and heating at a lower cost than diesel fuel shipped from Edmonton.

ATCO Midstream NWT Ltd. purchased a 33.33 percent interest in the Ikhil Joint Venture in December 2008. The joint venture owns two natural gas wells in the Ikhil Gas Field, located in the Caribou Hills northwest of Inuvik, Northwest Territories.

The two wells provide the town with an average of approximately 2.5 Mmcf/d of sweet, dry gas from the processing facility at Ikhil. The processing facility treats the gas before delivering it to the Town of Inuvik through a 6-inch pipeline, both owned by the joint venture.

Gas is made available through a gas distribution system that is owned and operated by Inuvik Gas Ltd. (IGL).  IGL is currently owned equally by the Inuvialuit Petroleum Corporation, ATCO Midstream NWT Ltd., and AltaGas Utility Holding Inc., a subsidiary of AltaGas Utility Group Inc
